Bournemouth Council considers the environment

The Bournemouth council meeting on Tuesday was all green as they addressed issues about the environment.

The public questions raised during this months meeting all focused on the effect of rubbish and carbon dioxide on the people of Bournemouth. Susan Chapman, a local resident, was the first to raise the carbon dioxide issue over concerns of the amount emitted during the air show last summer.

Cllr Robert Lawton, who is a Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport in Bournemouth, responded to the query by saying: “The council have to balance both the economic impact estimated to be 24 million pounds to the local economy and the enjoyment of the event by an estimated 700 thousand visitors with the environmental impact of the air festival.” He added: “As event organisers we are committed to reduce Co2 emissions.”

The second question, asked of the council, involved local resident Emma Kingsley who asked: “Can the Borough Council ban the release and mass release of any balloons from council owned land.” In doing so Miss Kingsley felt this would reduce litter. Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet Member for Economy and Tourism in Bournemouth, said the council will be “informing organisers that it is not acceptable to launch balloons during an event.” She then said: “This environment protection will also be built into the wording of all future agreements for the use of council land.”

When a deputation was put to the council, by Mrs Chapman, about examining the environmental effects that pollution in Bournemouth was having globally, the Mayor rejected her proposal.
