Poole Harbour owes its existence to the boating industry!

Having received £75,000 for refurbishment, Poole Museum has used the money well. The permanent exhibitions of the museum are based on relating the history of the town.
On the first floor it shows that Poole owes its existence to the fishing industry and the boat building business. It uses video footage and interviews to explain the full extent of this history, whilst also incorporating the model boat ‘A Lady of Avenel’, which was built in Poole, and paintings of ships constructed in Poole such as ‘The Brigantine Venus’.

The Studland Bay wreck is detailed, along with a model replica of the ship and personal belongings that were found, such as wooden combs. The exhibition has many items on display including the equipment that was used to assemble the boats in Poole and used on the boats such as the large ship’s binnacle that is displayed. The entrance to the museum also boasts the largest log boat in the world, which was recovered in 1934 and is thought to date back to 300 BC.

The lay out of the first floor is undoubtedly well presented, with the skilful use of light and space. The large amount of information available does not make it come across as crowded or cluttered. A clever use of multi-media is made by displaying large photos, videos and written explanations of the fishing and boat building industries, to keep both children and adults entertained and interested.

Noise disturbances in Bournemouth could be a thing of the past come the Summer!!

Noise disturbances from licensed premises may be a thing of the past for residents in the centre of Bournemouth.

In a meeting of Bournemouth Councillors on Monday Rob White, Head of Regulatory Services, said he wanted to create a patrol of officers that will deal with noise disturbances from licensed premises.

Poole, as Mr White said: “Got a night service around eight years ago.” Mr White said: “Poole is different from Bournemouth as we have more licensed premises and licensed premises are a big problem.” He went on to explain that in order for the scheme to be put in place, funding from the council would be needed, and the outcome of this request will not be known until April when the budget for this year is released by Bournemouth Council.

Mr White said that the scheme could be introduced in the summer, depending on funding and it would involve two to three officers being made available on Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm until 2am.

Cllr Russell, who fully supports the scheme, said: “I am very impressed by Poole.” He said Bournemouth should work in partnership with Poole to create what Cllr Russell described as “one unit.” Mr White agreed, saying: “Partnership is a brilliant idea.”

The aim for the future of the night scheme would be to have six to eight officers patrolling Saturday to Monday nights. Cllr Russell said: “It would cost quite a lot of money: we need to gauge the funding.”
