Obama, already in the spotlight
Since Barack Obama became president-elect, the whole world has been looking at him and the weight that rests on his shoulders is growing daily. He has been criticised by many already- its felt that he has gone back on his message of openness due to the people that he has appointed into his "inner circle". Rahm Emanuel who has been appointed as Chief of Staff is known for his straight talking antics and Joe Biden is known to be a strong supporter of military action, verging on the idea of go in and ask questions later. These do seem rather drastic appointments by someone who was so adamant to make sure that he came across as one of the people, during his campaign. What needs to be remembered is that he has to deal with Capitol Hill: although it would be lovely to think that Obama's message of change had reached everyone in every corner of the US, this is sadly not true. Therefore, he needs people like Emanuel who carry a lot of weight on Capitol Hill and who have gained a large amount of respect in the process. Let’s hope that the work Obama did during his campaign will not be lost, in the haste to portray a "ready to serve president", by appointing the wrong people into the wrong posts. It is ironic that Emanuel was part of the Clinton era, which is something that Obama has gone as far as he can to show that this is a period that he does not want to return to. But only time will tell and he has a lot to live up to. Let’s see if he can do it; only time will tell.
